Treated as R. teres by B&T in Bradleya 13/1995

Plant: many branched bushes hanging from trees or rocks, green; branchings 2 - 12 whorls, at the stem-ends or very near to it, with angles of about 20 to 60 degrees; the bottom ones approximately 20 to over 50 cm long, many times whorled one after the other, the top branches 3-7 cm long; no conspicuous decrease or increase of the number of the branches in the whorls on the outside of the bush; branches 2.5-4 mm thick, usually completely rounded, some shorter ones club-shaped at the ends.

  • Ribs . 5-9, somewhat standing out when not in full juicy condition.
  • Areoles hardly visible in the scale axil, with some tiny hairs and often from 1-2 short bristles, in addition a small indent in the younger shoots; scales small, red, fading paler, only 0.2 mm long to 0.5 mm wide at base, under these a red mark, without small humps; the areoles usually 15-40 mm apart from each other in the same row, shorter distances in the end branches;
  • Secondary areoles (bloom producing) shallow, without breaking open the skin-layer, with a bunch of tiny hairs near the base of the ovary, which remain if a bud is broken off or with the bottom part of the ovary; about 0.7 mm diameter;
  • Tertiary areoles (after flowering) amply 1 mm diameter, also with only one bunch of tiny hairs, a deeper hollow, with a breaking open of the secondary areoles and the later bristles of the areole hairs produced on the side of the lobe of the secondary areole.
  • Flowers on the younger branches on the side towards the top, odourless, 8-9 mm long.
  • Ovary green, globular, 3 mm diameter, on the upper edge some small greenish scales,
  • Nectary disc shaped, forming a ca. 1 mm wide ring about the Style, white, above the ovary, separated from the Style by a small nectar-furrow around the base of the Style only 0.3 mm high, green.
  • Stamens on outside of the nectary on the ovary, somewhat in 2 rows, densely side by side, the inner row somewhat higher; 4-5 mm long, white, the white anthers sticking out over the tepals. Style pale greenish, 6 mm long, from which 1.5 mm are the 5 white together-inclined stigma lobes Tepals 6, concave, pale greenish-yellow, 5 mm long, 3 mm wide, extended, all virtually the same size
  • Fruit pale green-sallow-red or greenish, many months at the branches, pulp strongly gluey.
  • Seeds black or reddish-black, approximately 1.3 mm long, 0.6 mm wide, 0.3 mm thick, arched on the back, ventrally not arched, very finely tubercled, Hilum inclined, long-oval, white.
  • Type locality high rock-walls in the Botucarai mountains near Candelaria, Rio Grande do Sul. Discovered by me in 1964. No. FR 1487. Fig. 20 and 21.
