Rhipsalis hylaea Ritter, Kakteen in Sudamerika, 4: 1261 1980.
Treated by B&T in Bradleya 13/1995 as R. baccifera subsp. baccifera

  • Plant: usually many times 2 - 4-whorled branched, forming little dense bushes, which hang down 1-2 m from trees, grass-green; branchings in the angle of usually 30 to 60 degrees; singles stems usually 10-80 cm long, 3-5 mm thick.
  • Ribs. 6-10, strongly rounded, but usually also still recognizable without shrinkage
  • Areoles about 1/3 mm diam., with about 1/3 mm long scales which the wool-felt doesn't cover; somewhat depressed, 1-2 short spines from about 1 mm length are located usually on its lower edge, on the same rib about 3-5 cm apart; flowering areoles over 1 mm diam., with plentiful short felt, somewhat deeper, it grows under the dermal-layer, and the bud breaks open this dermal-layer; Tertiary type areole I have not observed. Seedlings with only 4-6 clear ribs and with tiny white hairs, only 1 mm apart, all with about 10 very fine, white, 2-3 mm long bristles.
  • Flowers lateral, single, 6-8 mm long, with 5-8 mm opening wide.
  • Ovary almost scale-free.
  • Nectar receptacle, small, around the base of the style
  • Stamens on the ovary, erect, 3 mm long, white, anthers white.
  • Style white, 4.5 mm long, from which 4-5 stigma lobes 1 mm long, emerge.
  • Tepals 6-7, opening like a wheel, 4-5 mm long, 1-2.5 mm wide, the narrower ones inside and somewhat acuminate, white,, the outer greenish-white; also a few wide blunt greenish transition scales on the upper ovary edge which are green with red base.
  • Fruit small, spherical, white.
  • Seeds. about 1.2 mm long, 0.4 mm wide, 0.3 mm thick, ca. spindle-shaped, ventral not or hardly closed, Testa dark brown, somewhat shiny, almost smooth; Hilum crooked to the ventral-side, long-oval, white, flat;
  • Micropyle area and area of the outline of the hilum approximately similar size.
  • Type Santa Rosa, on the Maranon, Depart. Amazon. Peru No. FR 116. Discovered my me in August 1954 and by Rauh in 1956. Is also found in the Depart. Cajamarca and frequently in the area of Jaen and southward.

The name Rhipsalis hylaea first appeared in the catalogue of the company WINTER in 1957/58.

Rhipsalis heptagona Rauh was published in his Peruvian book & also in Backeberg. 1956/1958, and is the same as this plant. Because the description is insufficient, and there are several incorrest statements, this publication cannot be acknowledged. The areoles. what could apply only to a certain transition-age of the seedlings is declared as 1 cm. The fruit is declared as red, while we know that fruit-color has a high taxonomic position in Rhipsalis. From the flower he only declared that they are small, are single and yellowish- white; these bloom-characteristics are the most common in the Rhipsalis genus so they are without diagnostic value. Because of these inaccurate statements one wonders if Rauh's type locality (Jaen) is correct. A description can be assumed however only if it is correct and no other type applicable.

Rosa, Depart. Amazonas, Peruvia.
